How to compare mobile plans

Struggling to use up your subscribed mobile data for the month? Too much data left over every month?

Telcos are pushing out bigger mobile plans with bigger mobile data capacities but is that always necessary? Take a moment to consider, do you use up all of the mobile data on your plan for the month, or simply leave most of your data unused? Why should consumers have to pay for data that they do not use?

Now, imagine if you could exchange all that unused data for real benefits such as shopping vouchers or offsetting your next phone bill. Sounds too good to be true? Well with the new next generation blockchain telco, Gorilla Mobile, that becomes a reality.

The Gorilla Mobile SwitchBack feature, powered by blockchain, turns your unused mobile data into GO tokens or eVouchers, automatically giving you a fairer and smarter mobile experience. One can get back up to $24 worth of eVouchers per month from Grab, Shopee, Shell, Cold Storage in-app or automatically offset up to $24 for your next mobile bill. You can share your GO tokens with coworkers and friends and combine for even more eVouchers. Gorilla Mobile’s #GetReal campaign offers consumers their Switch25 and Switch45 plans where customers can pay $25 for 50GB of data or $45 for 80GB of data. Both plans allow customers to SwitchBack up to $15 and $24 worth of eVouchers respectively.

In this article, Gorilla would like to introduce a new and fairer way of comparing mobile plans. If we only consider how much we are paying per gigabyte of data based on telecom mobile packages, that can be grossly misleading (Fig 1.2)! Fig1.2 is a table from a Seedly blog post that was published in November 2021. The table of comparison is based on the telco’s packaged plan, irrespective of the user’s actual monthly usage. The table simply assumes all users will use up 100% of mobile data in their plan to derive the per GB cost. This however is not true. More than 95% of mobile users do not use up all the data in their plan. In fact, 7 out of 10 users consume less than half of what their plans offer. That means, for the price users are paying for their data plans, they are only benefitting from half, or less, of the result. Therefore, how can we judge the value of a data plan based solely on the scenario that all data will be used up for the month? Wouldn’t users rather benefit from the whole plan they are subscribed to, rather than just a fraction of it?

For a more accurate comparison, we should be comparing mobile plans and per gigabyte cost based on a user’s actual usage as shown in Fig 1.3. According to a Statista report published September 14, 2021(Fig 1.1), the average monthly mobile data consumption per user in 2020 is 10.8GB. As shown in the table below (Fig 1.3), Gorilla Mobile takes a reasonable average 10GB per user per month for comparison based on this statistic.

In the table above (Fig 1.3), it is evident that even though plans are skewed towards providing more data to users, there is no point if the user is only going to use a small percentage of it. One can also conclude that Gorilla Mobile’s Switch25 plans are the most value for money. For example, if you use an average of 10GB of data every month, you would be paying a reasonable $1.30/GB because Gorilla Mobile lets you SwitchBack 40GB of data at $0.30/GB, equivalent to $12 worth of GO tokens to offset your next bill or be exchanged for eVouchers. This is unlike other traditional telcos, where users are charged regardless if there is usage or not. Users are accustomed to thinking that just because a plan is offering more data for the same price, it has a higher value for money. Whereas they should be adopting the mindset of thinking about how to get the most out of their leftover data.

With Gorilla Mobile, low mobile data users need not pay for excessive data plans that they do not need. If you are worried about bursting your data, with 50GB and 80GB plans, Gorilla Mobile gives you more than enough data for the month. Use as much as you want and simply SwitchBack your data for a plethora of services and benefits. Despite most users striving to have the smartest devices, be it the latest phone model or the hottest smartwatch on the market, we limit ourselves to unjust old-school plans that force users to pay for data they do not even consume. With the new normal arising from the pandemic, our current workforce is shifting between the WFH/WFO arrangements, resulting in an erratic monthly usage of our mobile data. Yet most of us are tied to year long contracts and paying unnecessarily for big excessive data plans. This gives rise to next generation modern telcos such as Gorilla Mobile, who can break this cycle of traditional mobile plans, providing access to contemporary plans that allow users to benefit from used and unused data.

With Gorilla Mobile, whether you are a mobile warrior, a complete homebody or someone who loves to travel, you have access to better and fairer data plans. A plan that allows you to use however much or little you need that month while being compensated for your leftover data. Download the Gorilla Mobile app on iOS or on the Google Play Store and get real tangible benefits today! Enjoy a fairer and smarter mobile experience with Gorilla Mobile powered by blockchain.
